Volunteers are needed to weed out some invasive species from two area parksmandarinmuseum@bellsouth.net.
The first is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, to help rid Mandarin's Walter Jones Historical Park of more prolific weeds and plants as part of National Invasive Species Awareness Week. Volunteers with or without gardening tools, shovels, trowels, bow saws or lopping sheers, as well as work clothes and closed-toe shoes, are asked to converge on the park at 11964 Mandarin Road. An environmental scientist will help volunteers identify invasive species like Cesar weed, Coral ardisia, Air potato, Chinese privet, Camphor and Mimosa trees and Japanese wisteria, and show proper removal techniques. For more information, call the Mandarin Museum and Historical Society at (904) 268-0784 or e-mail it at
Those interested in more volunteer opportunities during National Invasive Species Awareness Week can help during the First Coast Air Potato Roundup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 5, at the Jacksonville Arboretum at 1445 Millcoe Road in Arlington. Volunteers can help rid the Arboretum of the invasive Air Potato vines, with Mardi Gras beads and a King Cake celebration at the end. Information - jacksonvillearboretum.org.
