The University of South Florida College of Engineering personally invites EDWARD H. WHITE HIGH SCHOOL to the 40^th annual Engineering EXPO! Located in USF’s engineering complex, this FREE exhibition seeks to educate K-12 students on the importance of engineering, science, technology, and math (STEM) in their lives. EXPO will be held on Friday the 17^th and Saturday the 18^th of February 2012, taking place from 9am to 4pm on both days.

 Last year the USF Engineering EXPO had more than 18,000 elementary, middle and high school students in attendance. Guests have the opportunity to visit interactive booths and shows put on by over 30 USF student organizations, 15 engineering and science departments, 10 research laboratories, and many local corporations. All of our exhibits are designed to be interactive - to teach students while entertaining them. This is a great opportunity for college-bound students to learn about USF Engineering and for students of all ages to gain an interest in the fields of engineering, science, technology, and math.

Each USF student organization is encouraged to fulfill Sunshine State Standard benchmarks for K-12 students during their activity. These benchmarks and corresponding activities are posted in a scavenger hunt handout at EXPO. On Saturday, Boy, Girl and Cub Scout troops will have the opportunity for their scouts to learn and earn merit badges that will be taught on site. Blue cards, badges, and belt loops will be provided and given out to those who earn them, free of charge (for the first 300).

Popular Shows at Engineering EXPO typically include:

●      IEEE: Laser Light Show

In previous years, corporate exhibitors have included TECO Energy, NASA, Honeywell, Raytheon, and Sypris Electronics. All of these corporations offer demonstrations and activities while giving students a unique opportunity to meet with local engineers.

This year’s event will be catered by Lupton’s BBQ once again. Lunch will be from 10am-2pm and the cost for a complete meal may vary from $5-$8, depending on selections. Vegetarian options will be available. More detailed information about the catering menu will be available closer to the event date on our website, along with other important updates. T-shirts, snacks, and many different souvenirs are also available for purchase throughout the day at the EXPO store.

FSU College of Medicine Summer Institute

Overview

The FSU College of Medicine Summer Institute is a one-week residential program on the campus of Florida State University designed for students who are committed to pursuing a career in the medical field.

The SSTRIDE Summer Institute motivates students to excel academically, introduces students to a variety of clinical settings, provides standardized test preparation for ACT and SAT, provides information about scholarships and university mentoring programs, exposes students to college life, gives students a perspective on the life of a medical student, expose students to certain aspects of the medical school curriculum through interaction with faculty and participation in faculty led presentations about medical topics, and inspires students to pursue careers in health-care professions.

• Introduce students to college life and FSU College of Medicine
• Inspire students to work with medically under-served patients
• Offer opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills in the field of medicine.

Eligibility

• The FSU College of Medicine Summer Institute is open to students who have completed their sophomore or junior year of high school. Applicants will be selected on the following criteria:
• 3.3 grade point average (minimum)
• Performance in college-preparatory math and science courses
• Essay (500 word minimum)
• Letters of recommendation from teacher and guidance counselor.

Program Cost :The cost is $875 which covers registration, lodging, meals, transportation to site visits and supplies.

Program Limit: 18 students per session.

Limited Scholarships are available for qualified students who show financial need or extenuating circumstances.

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships

The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships were established to encourage minority students to pursue college degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The scholarship program was created in 2010 by the first African American to walk in space and the ExxonMobil Foundation to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

Each June, $5,000 scholarships are awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students currently completing their senior year of high school in a member district of the Council of the Great City Schools.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (Gamma Rho Omega Chapter) has a mentoring program for girls in grades 9 & 10...

Program Criteria:

• -the program is open to high school girls in grades 9^th and 10^th

• -the applicant must be currently enrolled in school

• -the applicant must submit a completed counselor/teacher recommendation form

• -the applicant must submit a completed general application form

• -the applicant must agree to follow instructions, cooperate and be well behaved while participating in the program

• -the applicant must submit a completed parental consent form and release understand and agree to the conditions of this program in order to become a participant.

• Be college bound (accredited four-year college) anticipated in Fall 2012

 - Pay back to the foundation is to teach one year for each year they received the scholarship

 CONTEST RULES AND DEADLINES

• This essay contest is open only to high school seniors who reside in Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns counties in Florida and plan on continuing their education at a college, university, technical school, or other institution of higher learning. (The college or institution of higher learning does not have to be located in Florida.)
• All essays must be 500 words or less.
• All essays must be typed and double-spaced.
• If books, research materials, or other sources are used or quoted in an essay, that essay must follow the Modern Language Association (MLA) format for cross-referencing source material, including parenthetical references and a works cited page.
• All essays, accompanied by the Essay Cover Form, must be postmarked on or before February 21, 2012. Essays may be mailed to Wounded Warrior Project, Attn: Scholarships, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
• In March or early April, a panel of judges will choose the top essay from each county to receive a scholarship award of $1,000.

JUDGING PROCESS

Wounded Warrior Project will use a double-blind scoring system for its 2011-2012 Scholarship & Essay Contest. This system is designed to make the process of judging as easy and impartial as possible.

• Essays will be divided into each of the four counties.
• Judges will receive copies of the essays with the name and school of each student removed.
• Judges will read and score each essay individually and all essays will receive a score.
• The total points for each essay will be added together, and the essay with the highest cumulative points in each county wins.

POINT SYSTEM

The following system will be used to judge the essays:

Understanding of the topic                                                                0-30 points

Clarity and effectives of style and organization of essay                         0-20 points

Originality in approach and treatment of the topic                               0-30 points

Ability to establish a coherent, convincing response to the essay topic   0-10 points

The USDA / 1890 National Scholars Program

The goal of the USDA/1890 National Scholars Program is to increase the number of minorities studying agriculture, food, natural resource sciences and other related disciplines. Each year, hundreds of students apply for the program that provides full tuition, room, board, internships, and full-time employment upon graduation. The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program is available to graduating high school seniors that exhibit leadership and community service and desire to attend one of the 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Universities.

• Be a U.S. citizen
• Be a graduating high school senior
• Expect to hold a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate
• Have a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale)
• Have a combined verbal/math/written score of 1,500 or more on the SAT (note: 1,000 or more combined for those universities that only accept verbal/math score) or a composite score of 21 or more on the ACT;
• Be interested in attending one of the eighteen 1890 Land-Grant Universities
• Intend to study agriculture, food, natural resource sciences, or other related academic 
• disciplines
• Demonstrate leadership and community service 
• Submit an official transcript with the school seal and an authorized official's signature
