State Farm Youth Advisory Board Seeking New Associate Members Do you know a youth, 17-20 years of age, who would benefit from sitting on the State Farm Youth Advisory Board(YAB)? State Farm is currently accepting board member applications for the 2009-2010 YAB. Those who are chosen to serve as an Associate Youth Advisory Board member receive a $3,000 scholarship to be used for post-secondary education at a four-year, two-year or vocational training program. Associate members may become full Board members with a second year of service and receive a $5,000 scholarship. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2009. Duval County Public Schools Offers FCAT Resources for Parents and Students JACKSONVILLE – FCAT testing starts tomorrow in Duval County and Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) has launched an online FCAT Information Center at www.duvalschools.org that provides parents with a schedule of testing dates, answers to frequently asked questions, and access to valuable grade-specific resources and links that can be used to help students achieve success on the FCAT. Parents/Guardians of students in every grade level are also invited to the district’s FCAT Parent Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Raines High School, 3663 Raines Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32209. Staff from the district's reading, math and science departments will be answering questions and discussing FCAT preparation strategies that can be used by students at home. JUNIORS - free college!

I'm pleased to announce QuestBridge's expanded 2009 College Prep Scholarship, which will help more than 1,000 outstanding low-income high school juniors compete for admission to top-ranked colleges. We would be grateful if you could pass this information on to educators so they can convey it to qualified students. The College Prep Scholarship allows students to access many opportunities through one application, including: 10 full scholarships to college summer programs at Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Notre Dame, and Yale University 40 awards of college admissions counseling provided by QuestBridge staff 1,000 invitations to QuestBridge College Admissions Conferences at Stanford and Yale (increased from 800 last year) 100 all-expense-paid visits to top-ranked colleges (increased from 30 last year) The scholarship application is free of charge and due on March 31, 2009. Your assistance is vital to our ability to serve students as a non-profit program. Last year, 260 students gained admission and full four-year scholarships to top-ranked colleges through our programs, and 800 more QuestBridge applicants were admitted to selective colleges through the regular decision process with generous financial aid. This year, we plan to help even more students access these opportunities.

Summer Programs for High School Students

2009 SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS - FREE!! MIT announces its MITES Program, (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science), a challenging 6 week summer program that prepares promising rising seniors for careers in engineering and science. If you are selected, all educational, housing, meals and activity costs are covered. You must, however, pay for your own transportation to and from MIT. GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Science & Engineering Apprenticeship program (summer) - Applications due: Feb. 27, 2009 - This program places academically talented H.S. students (at least 16 yrs old, sophomores/ juniors) with interest in science & math in Dept. of Defense laboratories for an 8-wk period over the summer. This is an invaluable experience in the world of scientific research, with hands-on exposure to scientific & engineering practices not available in the HS environment. It is a paid apprenticeship ($2,000) and the students are assigned a scientist or engineer as their mentor. The National Center for Health Marketing Global Health Odyssey Museum is pleased to offer the 2009 CDC Disease Detective Camp (DDC). The Leadership Center at Morehouse College presents the 2009 Coca-Cola Pre-College Leadership Program. There are 2 programs, one for male students completing their sophomore or junior year, and the other for male students completing their senior year.
