Rising seniors - look for passes from your counselors...

...as the current seniors are taking their EOC exams and finals, guidance counselors will be meeting with our rising seniors (class of 2011), one-on-one, to discuss:
  1. preliminary senior credit checks (the official senior credit check will be completed next fall)
  2. classes for next year
  3. SAT/ACT
  4. are you on track for graduation?
  5. any questions you might have!
So look for a pass to guidance over the next couple weeks (and BE AT SCHOOL) so that we can meet with you and you can get your questions answered!

International Longshoremen's Association Local 1408 Scholarship

The ILA Local 1408 Scholarship Fund has proudly awarded over 1/4 of $1million in scholarships to qualified high school seniors and returning college students. The ILA College Scholarship Fund is a not-for-profit entity formed by the International Longshoremen's Association Local 1408 (Port of Jacksonville, Florida). This year's scholarship will range from $500 to $1,500 per student. Eligibility criteria:
  • 3.0 or better GPA
  • current high school senior, entering college freshman for fall of 2010
  • currently enrolled college student
  • demonstrate financial need (your parents'/guardians'/your 2009 tax return may be required)
  • Community Service Vita (attached to application)
  • Essay - "Government" In 2012, Florida will be electing a new governor. What characteristics do you think a good governor should have? What do you consider the most important issue facing your generation that needs attention from the governor's office? (text should be 2-3 pages, double spaced & typed)

JASMYN's 10th Annual Youth Alternative LGBTQ Prom is coming up fast. Prom will be May 28th at the Karpeles Manascipt Museum from 6-10pm. Many of their youth are in need and asking for help with some evening attire for Prom. Do you have an old prom dress, shoes, bags, bras, sports coats, dress pants, etc.? JASMYN is in need of all sizes of clothing, including plus size attire and accessories. Please let Megan know if you have anything you might be willing to part with for a good cause :) Also, feel free to pass along this announcement or message to your circle of friends/family.

The Riverside Children's Arts Center is a non-profit organization that provides creative arts education for children of Jacksonville at an affordable rate. This Spring and Summer they are looking for volunteers, ages 14 & up, to help us give these kids an amazing experience at our weekend workshops and summer arts camp. We have a variety of opportunities for students and adults such as being a teacher's assistant, helping with lunch prep or arts activities, being group leaders and much more. Society of American Military Engineers $1000 SCHOLARSHIP

SAMEJAX
The Society of American Military Engineers will grant scholarships in 2010 to graduating high school seniors who wish to seek studies in engineering or architecture. Should you have questions, please contact the local representative using the address or telephone number below.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
1) Be a high school senior.
2) Be a citizen of the United States at the time of application.
3) Be a resident of Clay, Duval, St Johns, Camden, or Nassau counties.
4) Have at least a 3.0 grade point averaged based on a 4.0 scale.
NOTES TO THE APPLICANT
1) The judging will be conducted by the local Jacksonville Post SAME Scholarship Committee on the basis of each candidate’s high school record.
2) The courses you have taken and the credits earned for the 9th through the first semester of the 12th grades will be used to help evaluate your application. You will be disqualified if a certified copy of your transcript is not submitted with the application.
3) Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit, solely on the content of the application. Applicants will be scored on the following: Academic Grades, Honors, Awards, Extracurricular Activities and an Essay.
4) Enroll in an engineering or architecture program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or the National Counsel of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB).
5) Scholarships will be paid directly to the university or college financial aid office. All scholarships are contingent upon your enrollment in a full-time status in an engineering or architecture program and being accepted by the college or university of your choice. Applicants must intend to earn a degree in engineering or architecture and to enter the practice of engineering or architecture after graduation.
6) The announcement of all winners/non-winners will be made in June 2010.
7) Keep a copy of your completed application for future reference.
