38th Annual University of South Florida Engineering Expo

The University of South Florida College of Engineering, and the Engineering EXPO staff are pleased to invite you and your class, youth group or family to the 38th annual Engineering EXPO. This year’s event will be held on Friday, February 19, and Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 9AM to 4PM. The Engineering EXPO has been held annually since 1973 in celebration of National Engineers’ Week. The event works as a venue to promote the engineering field, our institution, and the potential of our students. Your students will have the opportunity to participate in activities where they can have some "hands-on" engineering experience. Among some of the past events/shows (and some this year’s) during the two days of Engineering EXPO include the following: “The Science of Everything” by the Society of Physics Students, Gumdrop and spaghetti tower competition by Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society), Tours of our Nanotechnology lab facilities, mini baja and formula race cars made by the Society of Automotive Engineers, a concrete canoe made by Society of Civil Engineers, a Chemical Magic Show, Laser Lights Show and so much more. In addition, the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) has performed a very interesting astronomy show. These are just a few examples of the amazing ways you and your students, youth groups and/or families can explore the world of engineering.

The open house on Friday is typically composed of students coming on school field trips from all over the state and beyond! However, Saturday is usually composed of visitors from the general public as well as youth groups, including the Boy and Girl Scouts from all over who will have the opportunity to earn their Engineering Merit Badge. Either day you choose to come, you should be pleasantly educationally enlightened in engineering!

John V. Lombardi Scholarship

One of UF's most charismatic and popular presidents selects students each year who exemplify for UF Presidents John V. Lombardi's committment to academic excellence, community service, leadership, and public responsibility. Lombardi Scholars will receive a substantial scholarship for four years of study at UF; they will also be matched with a faculty mentor in their field and will receive support for several overseas study and internship experiences. Scholars are selected based upon an application and letter of nomination from their high school principal or guidance counselor, followed by an interview with a blue-ribbon committee of UF faculty and alumni. Continental Societies, Inc. National Scholarship for seniors

Continental Societies, Incorporated is a national organization whose purpose is to promote the economic, educational and social welfare of underserved and disadvantaged children and youth; to enhance their recreational activities; and to promote additional experiences necessary for their optimal development.
To apply, you must be:

• a graduating high school senior attending a college or university for the first time
• must have applied to and been accepted by a four-year college or university
• submit an essay (500 word minimum) which includes the following: long range & short term goals, plans for educational support (financial, academic, etc.), statement identifying why applicant should receive the scholarship, costs from the accepting institution (tuition, room & board, and fees), and personal achievements including honors and awards (school community, church and/or employment)

The applicants must have an interview with the local Chapter Scholarship Committee or President, and provide a picture suitable for publication. See Mrs. Curran in guidance for an application!

Community First Credit Union Accepting Scholarship Applications from Area High School Seniors

December 1, 2009, Jacksonville, FL – Community First Credit Union of Florida is now accepting applications from area high school seniors for its Raymond A. Vinson Scholarship. Five graduating seniors will receive a $1,000 scholarship annually for four years.



The Raymond A. Vinson Scholarship is awarded annually in honor of the founder of Community First Credit Union to students who excel scholastically and demonstrate financial need. Applicants or their parents must be members of Community First Credit Union and plan to attend college in Florida. The application is available in any Community First Credit Union branch or on the website at www.CommunityFirstFL.org
The deadline to apply is March 1, 2010.


Vinson founded the Jacksonville-based credit union in 1935 as the Duval County Teachers Credit Union, which originally had 50 members and $200 in assets. Today, the credit union has more than 104,000 members and over $1 billion in assets. Community First membership is open to everyone on the First Coast and has 19 branches in Duval, Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties.

Harvard University Announcement

Harvard University announced last weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution."

If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free... no tuition and no student loans!

FORMER FIRST LADY COLUMBA BUSH LAUNCHES 2009-2010 ARTS FOR LIFE! SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

To be considered for an Arts for Life! Scholarship, students must:

• Be graduating high school seniors from a public, private or home education program in Florida in 2010.

• Submit a completed application, a brief essay explaining “How the arts have positively influenced my life” and a sample of work in creative writing, dance, drama, music or visual arts.

A committee of judges for each of the five disciplines, comprised of respected experts, reviews and scores the students’ essays and work samples. Each committee selects the top scoring applicants as recipients of an Arts for Life! scholarship.

Winning seniors will be notified in the spring and invited to a special luncheon in their honor hosted by Jeb and Columba Bush. Recipients are invited to showcase their arts discipline through performance and exhibition during the event. As part of the program’s professional development program, the scholarship recipients will also meet renowned working artists who will provide invaluable advice for pursuing a career in the arts.

Art & Essay Contest

Amity Turkish Cultural Center (ATCC) and Florida State College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) are presenting the Annual Art and Essay contest for middle and high school students in the State of Florida. ATCC is also proud to have WJCT as the media sponsor and CSX as the business sponsor. The Contest is approved by Duval County, St John's County, and Clay County Public Schools.

Objective: To promote critical thinking skills as relates to diversity and multicultural issues. To recognize and create ways for young people to think about helping their community and to think in universal terms to foster more opportunities for alliance of civilizations, i.e. intercultural understanding and respect.

Theme: Middle and high school students in the state of Florida are invited to submit an original artwork and/or essay on the theme "Alliance of Civilizations" which is the United Nations' concept of interaction and coordination among nations and cultures globally. Its purpose is to establish relations and facilitate cross-cultural dialogue, understanding, reconciliation and cooperation and, in the process, to help counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism. Prizes: ATCC will distribute 24 awards to students and their teachers. All of the participating students will receive a special participation certificate whereas the winners and their teachers will receive special achievement certificates. The Award Ceremony will take place on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at 7 p.m. at The Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts (at Florida State College at Jacksonville, South Campus).
