Play It Safe! Video Contest
|
Sports teach valuable lessons
- about teamwork, goals, leadership, and how to handle defeat and learn from
mistakes. One lesson many are still learning, though, is when not to play.
A recent Institute of
Medicine (IOM) and National Research Council (NRC) report finds that as many
as 1.6 million to 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions and
other traumatic brain injuries are reported each year in the United States.
Some youth athletes don't tell anyone they have been hurt because they want
to keep playing. And players may resist taking all the time they need to
heal, with or without teammates', parents', and coaches' backing.
The IOM/NRC "Play it Safe" video
Public Service Announcement contest invites youth ages 13-22 to create a
30- to 60-second video about how they can change a sports culture that may
encourage "shaking it off" and getting back in the game, and how
they can get their teammates, coaches, and parents to recognize the signs,
symptoms, and need for proper treatment of concussions.
Entries will be accepted
through May 30. Winning entries in each of three school-age categories will
be awarded a $300 gift card. More information and official rules and
regulations can be found at www.iom.edu/PlayItSafe.
