Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards - apply by Sept. 15th, Juniors!

Rising Latino high school seniors (graduating in 2015) across America can apply to the Youth Awards program presented for the 16th year by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF). The 2014 Youth Awards application is available on our website at www.HispanicHeritage.org or by clicking on the following link:http://hhfawards.hispanicheritage.org/2014/forms/login.php,all supplemental material must be postmarked no later than Monday, September 15th, 2014.

To participate in the Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards you must be:
·      A current high school rising senior, graduating in the Spring of 2015
·      Planning to enroll in college in 2015-2016
·      A citizen or permanent resident of the US
·     Of Hispanic/Latino descent (at least one parent)
·     Minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or 7.5 (on a 10.0 scale)
·     Willing to travel at own cost to the awards ceremony in your selected region.

Regional ceremony attendance is absolutely mandatory for students who are selected.
Recipients are selected for their accomplishments in the classroom and community, and for their focus on various categories. Recipients are awarded up to $3,000 in educational grants to be used for their college education or to fund a community service effort. In each of the 10 regions, three students will be honored in various categories including those listed below. The regions include: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, San Jose and Washington, DC. Students from across the USA can apply in the region nearest to their area of residence in an effort to ensure all Latino students have an opportunity for the Youth Awards. If selected, the students only have to attend the awards event to receive their award.

The 2014 Youth Awards categories are:

·         Business & Entrepreneurship – Presented by BBVA Compass
·         Education - Presented by Southwest Airlines
·         Engineering & Mathematics - Presented by ExxonMobil
·         Healthcare Science - Presented by CVS Caremark Workforce Initiatives
·         Innovation & Technology – Presented by The Entertainment Software Association

Students are also encouraged to join our Latinos On Fast Track (LOFT) Network. LOFT is a leadership and workforce development program which connects emerging Latinos to each other, to experts, to resources, to platforms, and career paths in STEM fields, business and finance, education and other fields. WALK-INS WELCOME!

Before or after school you can always come by to see us! Especially if you aren't trying to catch a bus. If you are a bus rider, the best way to see us is to make an appointment.

APPOINTMENTS ENCOURAGED!
We want to give you our UNDIVIDED attention and with the number of tasks a school counselor has, that can be difficult when walking in or simply stopping by. Student Counselor Request Forms can be picked up in guidance (before or after school or between classes) and dropped off in guidance (before or after school or between classes). They sit on Ms. Menter's desk. Simply fill one out, leave it for us and we will be sure to call you out of class!

2-1-1

United Way 2-1-1 is the suicide intervention and prevention helpline for this region and the call center is nationally accredited by the American Association of Suicidology. Call center specialists are also certified and trained to handle crisis and suicide-related calls.

MISSION

Our mission as School Counselors at Edward H. White High School is to provide a comprehensive counseling program that attends to the personal/social, academic, and career preparation/college planning needs of all students. Services include group and individual counseling, academic support (educational resources), responsive services, career and college planning, and student and family advocacy. Our goal is to promote a commitment to life-long learning, personal and academic growth, and to aid students in becoming responsible, culturally aware and productive members of society. This foundation will be supported and further strengthened by consultation with educators, administrators, parents, and community advocates.

PHILOSOPHY

The school counseling department at Edward H. White High School believes that every student should be treated with dignity and value. We will strive on a daily basis to provide services to all students through a comprehensive school counseling program.

Fundamentally based on the belief that all of our students can learn and achieve at their highest potential with proper support from staff, parents/guardians and the community
Planned and implemented by the Edward H. White School Counseling Department, based on guidelines from the Duval County Public School’s Office of Guidance Services and all stakeholders who support the academic, career and personal/social development of students
Committed to providing a comprehensive, developmentally sound program of services based on the ASCA national model to meet the needs of our diverse population and evaluated by data driven models
Proactive in the delivery of the Edward H. White High School Counseling Curriculum and in monitoring student’s academic, career, and personal/social achievements
