4th Annual Wounded Warriors Scholarship

TOPIC:
Why is it important to help our Wounded Warriors succeed as they return home from serving our country?
HOW TO APPLY:
Essays must be submitted online via the application form. Remember, you must cite any books, research materials, or other sources of information. Be sure to read and understand the scholarship rules and deadlines.
All completed applications must be submitted using the application form no later than June 1, 2014.
ESSAY RULES AND DEADLINES
  • The 2013-2014 essay application window is open only to high school seniors who reside in Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns counties in Florida and plan on continuing their education at a college, university, technical school, or other institution of higher learning. The college or institution of higher learning does not have to be located in Florida.
  • All essays must be 500 words or less.
  • All essays must be typed and double-spaced.
  • If books, research materials, or other sources are used or quoted in an essay, that essay must follow the Modern Language Association (MLA) format for cross-referencing source material, including parenthetical references and a works cited page.
  • All essays must be submitted online via the application form no later than June 1, 2014.
  • In June, the scholarship committee members will choose the top essay from each county to receive a scholarship award of $1,000. In late June or early July, the scholarship committee members will contact the award recipient for each county.
JUDGING PROCESS
Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) will use a double-blind scoring system for its 2013-2014 Scholarship Essay Application. This system is designed to make the process of judging as easy and impartial as possible.
  • Essays will be divided into each of the four counties.
  • Scholarship committee members will receive copies of the essays with the name and school of each student removed.
  • Scholarship committee members will read and score each essay individually and all essays will receive a score.
  • The total points for each essay will be added together, and the essay with the highest cumulative points in each county will be selected. In the event of a tie, the scholarship committee members will make the final decision.
POINT SYSTEM
The following criteria will be used to evaluate the essays:
Recognition - Does the essay present an understanding of the topic?0-5 points
Effectiveness - Is the essay presented with clarity and organization?0-5 points
Innovation - Does this essay display originality on the topic?0-5 points
Overall Story - Does this essay honor and empower Wounded Warriors?0-5 points
Inspiration - Does the essay inspire others to take action?0-5 points

GUIDELINES FOR THE COUNSELOR OR TEACHER
There are no photocopying restrictions on this material. It can be reproduced as many times as necessary. However, the applicant is required to have a completed Essay Cover Form attached to his/her essay.
