FAMU African-American Women in Computer Science Scholarship

Florida A & M University is providing an outstanding opportunity for Black women entering college in the fall of 2009. It is designed to address their absence in the field of computer technology. Art & Essay Contest

Amity Turkish Cultural Center (ATCC) and Florida State College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) are presenting the Annual Art and Essay contest for middle and high school students in the State of Florida. ATCC is also proud to have WJCT as the media sponsor and CSX as the business sponsor. The Contest is approved by Duval County, St John's County, and Clay County Public Schools.

Objective: To promote critical thinking skills as relates to diversity and multicultural issues. To recognize and create ways for young people to think about helping their community and to think in universal terms to foster more opportunities for alliance of civilizations, i.e. intercultural understanding and respect.

Theme: Middle and high school students in the state of Florida are invited to submit an original artwork and/or essay on the theme "Alliance of Civilizations" which is the United Nations' concept of interaction and coordination among nations and cultures globally. Its purpose is to establish relations and facilitate cross-cultural dialogue, understanding, reconciliation and cooperation and, in the process, to help counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism. Prizes: ATCC will distribute 24 awards to students and their teachers. All of the participating students will receive a special participation certificate whereas the winners and their teachers will receive special achievement certificates. The Award Ceremony will take place on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at 7 p.m. at The Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts (at Florida State College at Jacksonville, South Campus).

1st Place: LAPTOP PC (Student and Sponsoring Teacher)

2nd Place: $200 Gift Card (Student)

3rd Place: $100 Gift Card (Student)

The Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest will be held on February 6, 2010 (9am-1pm) at the University Center on the campus of The University of North Florida. The contest first place Recipient will be awarded a $1000.00 education award to the college of his choice. Prospective contestants must complete the registration form and mail to the P.O. Box address below no later than Jan 15, 2010.Speeches must have original content and cannot exceed more than 800 words (minimum 4-maximum 6 minutes).The members of Upsilon Lambda and the MLK Oratorical Committee will then determine which contestants will compete at the event on 2/6/2010. Tickets to attend this extraordinary event will be $30.00 which includes a breakfast and a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial information package. Requirements:

1. Must have a score of 1000 or above on the SAT
2. Must have a score of 22 or above on the ACT
3. Must be interested in obtaining a college degree to teach school in Florida
4. This scholarship application will be sent to state competition & IF a winner, they would receive: $500 freshman year, $750 sophomore year, $1000 junior & senior years
5. Applicant might win a local scholarship for $500 each year for a total of 4 years
6. Pay back to the foundation: teach one year for each year they received the scholarship
