Welcome to the 2014 Doodle 4 Google competition

Before there was an airplane, there were doodles of cool flying machines. And before there was a submarine, there were doodles of magical underwater sea explorers. Since the beginning of time, ideas big and small, practical and playful, have started out as doodles. And we’re ready for more. One talented young artist will see his or her artwork on the Google homepage and receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for his or her school.

FEMA SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR YOUTH PREPAREDNESS COUNCIL

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is seeking applicants for its Youth Preparedness Council.

The Youth Preparedness Council is a unique opportunity for youth leaders to serve on a highly distinguished national council and participate in the Youth Preparedness Council Summit. Additionally, the youth leaders have the opportunity to complete a self-selected youth preparedness project and to share their opinions, experiences, ideas, solutions and questions regarding youth disaster preparedness with the leadership of FEMA and national youth preparedness organizations.  Once selected, members serve on the Council for one year, with the option to extend for an additional year, if formally requested by FEMA.

Council activities and projects center around five key areas of engagement: Programs, Partnerships, Events, Public Speaking/Outreach and Publishing. Members represent the youth perspective on emergency preparedness and share information with their communities. They also meet with FEMA on a regular basis to provide ongoing input on strategies, initiatives and projects throughout the duration of their term.

Any individual between the ages of 12 and 17 who is engaged in individual and community preparedness or who has experienced a disaster that has motivated him or her to make a positive difference in his or her community, may apply to serve on the Youth Preparedness Council. Individuals who applied last year are highly encouraged to apply again.  Adults working with youth and/or community preparedness are encouraged to share the application with youth who might be interested in applying.

Youth interested in applying to the Council must submit a completed application form and two letters of recommendation.  Specific information about completing and submitting the application and attachments can be found in the application instructions.  All applications and supporting materials must be received no later than February 24, 2014, 11:59 p.m. EST in order to be eligible.  New Youth Preparedness Council members will be announced in May 2014.

ORLY'S SUPER BENEFIT CONCERT Sunday, February 2 at 1 PM at the Jacksonville Jewish Center Ari Howard, a fourteen - year old Jacksonville Jewish Center member and student at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida, lives just a few houses away from another local teen, Orly Ohayon. Ari is reaching out to the community to help his seventeen - year old neighbor as she continues to recover from a tragic accident, by organizing a Super Benefit Concert. Orly and her mother, Esther Ohayon (of blessed memory), were hit by a car on September 13, 2013, while they were walking across San Jose Boulevard to attend Yom Kippur Services. Orly's mother was killed instantly and Orly miraculously survived. Today, Orly requires a great deal of medical attention as she recuperates from her severe injuries. Orly is strong and resilient. Even as she mourns the loss of her mother and faces tremendous challenges as she recovers, whenever you see Orly, she has a contagious smile on her face.

MEET THE MUSICIANS Mike Shackelford    Whether playing for thousands in a large concert hall, opening for the Beach Boys at an outdoor festival, or jamming in intimate nightclubs, for Mike it has always been about the music. Al Poindexter & Eric Wendorf Al performs folk songs on his steel bottleneck guitar or claw hammer banjo. Eric plays blues harmonica and stomps his foot to the rhythm, while getting the crown to join along. Stephen Robinson Heralded by The New York Times for his "effortless virtuosity with intelligence and good taste," Stephen Robinson's recordings have received unanimous critical acclaim. 2014 WOCCF Universal Teen Scholarship Program

The Frances Hesselbein Student Leadership Program was established by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) in 2006 to identify exemplary young people through their participation in the MCEC Student 2 Student (S2S) program. The program was named for Mrs. Frances Hesselbein, in recognition of her dedication to the development of children and youth.  Mrs. Hesselbein is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Leader to Leader Institute and the former CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States highest civilian honor, in 1998.

Under the direction of the MCEC, and following the inspiration and guidance of Mrs. Hesselbein, this one-week training program is offered at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The program delivers intensive training, interaction with positive role models, and practical applications which benefit participants in their studies and throughout their lifetime. Full Tuition includes transportation, lodging, meals, program materials and supplies.

The Frances Hesselbein Student Leadership Program objectives are focused on the following major areas:  team building, leadership development, to include goal setting, and motivational workshops; resilience, life span human development, character development, community involvement and leaders in action.
