Florida Poly Premeire is Coming to a Theater Near You! Join us at your local movie theater to learn more about Florida Poly. We will be rolling out the purple carpet for our future students and parents to showcase our six innovative degrees and our unique college experience. Meet our admissions team for a short presentation and video from 11am to 1pm at the following dates and locations:  Sign-up at BeTheNext.com Florida Polytechnic will soon be open for campus tours! On November 25th, the admissions team will be moving into our new building on campus and will begin prepping for visitors. Tours will be up and running December 2nd. Come see our 160,000-square-foot Innovation, Science and Technology (IST) building which will house classrooms, labs, common areas and faculty offices. You’ll get a firsthand look at our 170-acre campus that will continue to develop as Florida Poly expands. Once you’ve seen the campus, take time out to explore the city of Lakeland. Walk around the shops or catch an IMAX movie at the Lakeside Village shopping center. Then have dinner at one of the many restaurants downtown, or – better yet – ask us about Lakeland’s next Food Truck Rally! You can coordinate your visit for a special post-tour treat. Because our campus is still an active construction site, everyone who goes on tour will be required to wear long pants, closed toed shoes, and a Florida Poly hard hat. As a result, we can only accommodate small groups of 12 or less at a time. For larger groups, please contact the admissions office directly. Over the past few months, Florida Poly recruiters have traveled throughout the state of Florida visiting more than 200 high schools and college fairs. The student response has been amazing! One special event that Florida Poly attended was Robocon, which took place in Tampa October 27-28. Robocon brought together students with a passion for engineering from around the state of Florida. Our team met tons who were excited about the possibility of joining Florida Poly’s inaugural class in 2014! Events like Robocon are important for introducing young engineers to opportunities that are right at their fingertips – like Florida Poly, a dedicated STEM university right here in their home state! December 1, 2013 - Initial Application Deadline Counselors, it has been an exciting first application season for Florida Polytechnic University! The interest from students has exceeded our expectations. So far we have received more than 3,500 inquiries and over 1,000 applications. Much of this interest is thanks to your awesome work helping us get the word out about Florida Poly. Thank you! We’ve also tried to make the application process as simple as possible. Remember, there is no essay requirement and students are able to submit their application even if they do not have their transcripts, letters of recommendation or ACT/SAT (with Writing) test scores just yet. The $30 application fee is waived until December 1st, but if a student, for some reason, cannot summit their application before that date, we will accept fee waivers to ensure no one misses this great opportunity due to financial burden. If you’ve already earned college credit, be sure to send official transcripts to us as soon as possible so that we can provide you with an admission decision as quickly as possible. Volunteer for a Visit from St. Nicholas Decorating Party:

Thursday December 5th 6:00 pm

Join as we transform a normal community school into a magical wonderland for the children who attend. We will deck the halls with gold tinsel and place backpacks on the desks of each child at the school for them to discover the following morning. This is a rewarding opportunity for all! We recommend you wear shoes that you can move up and down the halls in!

Volunteer for a Visit from St. Nicholas Discovery Day:

Friday December 6th 7:45 am

On the morning of December 6th, the children of selected local elementary schools will arrive to a magical surprise. Their school will be decorated with gold tinsel and upon arrival to their classroom; they will find a new backpack filled with books and toys! Volunteers will then visit classrooms and read our story of St. Nick to children and share messages of kindness and anonymous giving. This is such a special moment for all parties; volunteer, child and teacher. Volunteers will arrive and check-in at a predetermined meeting area at the school. A light breakfast and coffee will be prepared for volunteers. Your school's Project Leader will instruct volunteers on classroom assignments. Depending on the number of volunteers, you may be asked to read to more than one classroom. Please dress appropriately for school and we invite you to be festive!

Be a Project Leader:

Project leaders are present at Decorating Party and Discovery Day. There primary role is to get everyone signed in and delegate tasks to the volunteers. There is a Project Leader Training for all new Project Leaders on Monday, December 2nd at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm at the HandsOn Jacksonville Office, 6817 Southpoint Pkwy, Ste 1902. Training should run about 30 to 45 minutes. If you are interested in being a Project Leader please contact Jenny O'Donnell - jenny@handsonjacksonville.org 

Be St. Nicholas:

St. Nick is the jolly green giant who dresses up in a St. Nick costume and it placed at one of our schools on the morning of December 6th at 7:45 am. St. Nick visits each classroom and distributes a kindness coin to every child and shares messages of kindness, anonymous giving and charity. Anyone interested in being a St.  Nick please contact Jenny O'Donnell - jenny@handsonjacksonville.org

Emphasis in judging will be placed on a goal statement that includes specific information on experience or steps taken toward the goal, persuasiveness (e.g., how your past achievements/experiences and your future planning increase the probability of reaching your goal), why you think that you will succeed, and also grammar, spelling and punctuation.

• Only one application is allowed per student in this public award competition.
• Applicants must intend to enroll in an accredited U.S. institution for the 2014-2015 academic year.
• Applicants must complete all required information on the entry form.
• Essays must be the applicants' original work and no more than 550 words in length.
• Essays must be entered via cut/paste on our scholarship application form on this Web site. Essays will be truncated to the limit specified.
• Essay submissions are stored and reviewed as "plain text" without additional markup.  Please make note of this when crafting your essay.

Military Appreciation C.A.M.P. NOVEMBER 30th

WHAT: Military Appreciation Life Camp in association with The Wounded Warriors Project. The theme for this event is  "Successful Transition: When The Uniform Comes Off".

WHO: This camp is for anyone and their immediate family who has served in the military or about to transition out. Children must be a minimum age of 5 years old to attend and participate with the adults.

9th - 11th Graders - UF Open House November 25th

The University of Florida Office of Admissions is hosting a one-day open house for prospective high school students in grades 9-11.

Students and their parents are invited to get a glimpse of UF campus life, access academic guidance and opportunities for college planning, and learn about the many educational options on campus and online. This event is free, and high school students who have a desire to continue their studies at one of the country's most respected universities are encouraged to attend.

This event will be Monday, November 25, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the O'Connell Center on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida.

Register and plan to come for the entire open house or at any time during the posted hours.

Attendees will learn more about UF admissions requirements, financial aid, and the new Self-Reported Academic Record. Representatives will be available to discuss educational opportunities in the 16 UF colleges, UF Online and the Innovation Academy.

Registration is required.

The O'Connell Center is located at 250 Gale Lemerand Drive on the corner of University Avenue and Gale Lemerand Drive. Parking will be available in the garage adjacent to the O'Connell Center.

RMHC®/HACER® Scholarship Program Opportunities

As part of its mission of providing the highest quality educational opportunities to high-need Latino youth, the LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC) is partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) to help promote the RMHC/HACER scholarship program to qualifying high school seniors across the U.S.

RMHC/HACER is one of the largest scholarships in the country assisting Hispanic high school students pursuing a college education. Since its inception in 1985, more than $24 million has been awarded in scholarships to Hispanic students to support their college education dreams. The program expanded in 2008 to include four RMHC/HACER National Scholarships of $100,000 to be awarded annually to deserving high school graduates. Scholarships are awarded on a national and regional level. Applications for the 2013-2014 RMHC/HACER National Scholarship will be accepted from October 1st through January 21st, 2014.
