GATOR BOWL Scholarship

The Gator Bowl Award of Excellence Scholarship consists of a one-time gift of $5,000 to one male and one female student-athlete for use at any accredited University or Community College.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible to receive a Gator Bowl Award of Excellence, the applicant must:

• Maintain a 3.0+ GPA (on an unweighted 4.0 scale) from an accredited high school in the First Coast area.

• Participate in a junior varsity or varsity sport or its equivalent (dance, gymnastics, tae-kwon-do)

• Participate in extra-curricular activities through church, school or the community

• Exhibit exemplary behavior, thereby being a good role model for peers

• Pledge to remain drug-free, alcohol-free and tobacco-free

• Complete the application process by November 15, 2013 of senior year of high school.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The following factors will be considered in selecting the scholarship recipients:
• Athletic commitment – participation in varsity, intramural or youth league sport(s)
• Career goals of applicant
• Community Service
• Good citizenship
• Involvement in extracurricular activities
• Leadership qualities
• Positive attitude
• Presentation of application packet – neatness and organization
• Recommendations of Guidance Counselor, Coach and Community Leader
• Relationship with peers and superiors
• Scholastic record

The application deadline for this scholarship cycle must be postmarked by Friday, November 15, 2013. Scholarship recipients will be selected by December 15th and the awards will be presented at the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl Coaches Luncheon presented by CSX on Tuesday, December 31, 2013.

NEED COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS?

Plans are underway for the 2013 Mayor's Holiday Festival scheduled for Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. The City of Jacksonville has produced this event for more than 30 years with a great deal of community support. 

This celebration allows THOUSANDS of senior citizens the opportunity to be among friends, savor a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings, and enjoy outstanding entertainment, a visit from Santa Claus and fabulous door prizes. Approximately 3,000 seniors will be attending this Holiday Festival. Some have little or no family in the area and will probably spend the holidays alone. They truly look forward to this event each year to spend time with others and celebrate the season. 

To pull off an event of this magnitude, we need a large contingent of volunteers. This would be a great opportunity for students to earn community service hours. Volunteers will be needed for the following:

They will need assistance with set up, decorating, serving and cleaning up.

SHIFTS:

8AM - 1PM: set up & decorate - 100 volunteers needed

1PM - 6PM: serving and clean up - 250 volunteers needed

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level.

The program's goals are to applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities. Over the past 18 years, more than 345,000 young Americans have participated in the program, and more than 100,000 of them have been officially recognized for their volunteer efforts.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is also conducted in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland, India, and China, where Prudential has significant business operations.

Who is eligible?

Any young person who:

• is in grades 5-12 as of November 5,
• is a legal resident of any U.S. state or Washington, D.C.,
• has engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application, and
• submits a completed application to a school principal or the head of an officially designated local organization by November 5.

Community Hospice Thrift Shops are looking for teen volunteers for every aspect of running the store. From assisting customers and operating cash registers to receiving and pricing donations and creating displays, Community Hospice volunteers are vital to the success of the Thrift Shops. 

Volunteering doesn't require any special talents. A commitment of a few hours a week can make a world of difference for adults and children with life-limiting illnesses, along with support for their loved ones. 

Opportunities are available at our Orange Park and Jacksonville stores. Volunteers must be 15 years old.

The AXA Achievement^sm Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to young people throughout the nation.

The 2014 program is underway.  Apply online.

APPLY EARLY:  only the first 10,000 applications will be accepted.

The application deadline is December 15, 2013, but if 10,000 applications are received

before that date, the program will automatically close.

Fifty-two winners – one from each state, the District of Colombia and Puerto Rico – are selected by our nonprofit partner, Scholarship America, to receive one-time scholarship awards of $10,000 each.

National Winners

From the pool of 52 state winners, ten are selected as national winners and earn an additional one-time scholarship of $15,000. This brings the top AXA Achievers total scholarship awards to $25,000 each.

Take a Veteran to School Day events allow students to learn more about Veterans Day while connecting with local Veterans, and gives Veterans an opportunity to share stories of service. These events, organized on or in the weeks leading up to November 11th's Veterans Day, can range from a simple one-class visit to an all-school assembly. This is an excellent opportunity to show Veterans how much we value their service, while bringing history to life in the classroom.

Visual Art Contest 2013

In conjunction with Mayor Brown’s Essay Contest and Duval County Schools’ Jacksonville Goes to College Week, we are having a visual art contest.

We are requesting that student art work be submitted for judging and inclusion as potential cover design of a children’s book of essays. Submitted art work will be judged in the categories of Elementary school, Middle school and High school. At least three winners will be chosen from each category.

The art work should relate to the Essay theme of “Education is …” The theme seeks to “explain what education means to you or tell us in your own words what you believe education is and how it will help you reach your dreams and goals.”

Elan is an international literary magazine run by students from the creative writing department at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. The Parent Portal Log in page has changed its look. 

There are now 2 ways to log into the portal: one for students and one for Parents/Guardians.

·         Students now use their DCPS Network username and password to log into the grade portal. This is the username/password that is used to log into any DCPS computer.  Students will no longer be able to use the school issued portal password with a combination of random letters and numbers.

·         Parents/guardians must now use a PARENT/GUARDIAN username and password of random letters and numbers that is issued at the school.  If parents/guardians are not able to log in with the username and password that they have previously used, it is best to contact the school to ensure their login information is a PARENT/GUARDIAN login.

Mayo Clinic and the School of Health Sciences will be hosting their high school Boot Camp event this fall.  This event will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2013.

The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for high school students to learn about potential careers in healthcare, and to create an exciting, hands-on experience to attract young people to healthcare careers. 

 This event has had an overwhelming response in the past so you are encouraged to return the completed paperwork as soon as possible as they can only accept 50 students for the event and it is based on a first-come first-served basis.  Any students interested in participating should complete the paperwork below and return to Elaine Riddell's attention.

DISCOUNTED PERFORMANCE FOR DUVAL COUNTY STUDENTS

Bully, written and performed by Lee Kaplan, a Jacksonville native, will be playing at Jacksonville Theatre September 20^th through September 22^nd  at 8 PM. Tickets are $10 for students, $15 general admission. Performances will be held at the Harold K. Smith Playhouse, located at 2032 San Marco Blvd.

The play is an autobiographical account based on Kaplan’s sixth grade journal entries, which depict the bullying he endured in middle school.  Bully has received extremely positive reviews after performances in Washington DC at the Capital Fringe Festival as well as New York City at the New York International Fringe Festival.

New College Scholarship Opens for High-Achieving, Low-Income Students Nationwide

Scholarship One of Most Generous in Nation for High School Seniors

LANSDOWNE, Va., Sept. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation opened a new college scholarship for high-achieving, lower-income high school seniors who seek to attend the country's best four-year colleges and universities.  In what is expected to be an extremely competitive scholarship, as many as 40 recipients will be awarded up to $30,000 each year for tuition, books, living expenses, and other required fees. The application is open through November 5, 2013. Final notification will be made in February 2014.
Low-income students attending even the best colleges often have unmet need and the transition to college can be challenging for many.  "Though we are proud to offer one of the most generous college scholarships in the country, our program will do more than alleviate the financial burden of higher education," said Emily Froimson, vice president of programs at the Foundation. "Scholarship recipients will have access to an on-staff adviser, a supportive community of extraordinary scholars, and opportunities they might not otherwise have, such as funding for internships, study abroad and the opportunity to apply for continued funding for graduate study. There are few programs like it."
To be eligible, applicants must plan to graduate from a U.S. high school in spring 2014 and enroll in an accredited four-year college in fall 2014; earn a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above; receive a SAT combined math and critical reading score of 1200 or above or an ACT composite score of 26 or above; and demonstrate unmet financial need. A rigorous review will consider grades, standardized test scores, participation in available advanced courses, student essays, letters of recommendation, and family finances.
