Scholarship Challenge at our Macon, Georgia campus on Saturday, November 16,
2013. They plan to award valuable scholarships this fall to high school
seniors who are interested in Mercer’s engineering program. Last year we
awarded more than $2.5M to over 85 students. More information about

Here are some highlights!
The Saturday event on November 16th will include:
- Campus and engineering laboratory tours in the morning
- Lunch and a short program for students and their
parents
- The scholarship challenge (a math and language test) in
the afternoon -- no calculus background is required
- A parents’ program in the afternoon in parallel with
advisors in admissions, housing, and financial aid
- Cookie and punch social time to talk with other
participants, faculty and admissions counselors

GRADE PORTAL ACCOUNTS ARE HERE!
The Parent Portal
Log in page has changed its look.
There are now 2 ways to log into the
portal: one for students and one for
Parents/Guardians.

Students
now use their DCPS Network username and password to log into the grade
portal. This is the username/password that is used to log into any DCPS
computer. Students will no longer be able to use the school issued portal
password with a combination of random letters and numbers.
·
Parents/guardians
must now use a PARENT/GUARDIAN username and password of random letters
and numbers that is issued at the school. If parents/guardians are not
able to log in with the username and password that they have previously used,
it is best to contact the school to ensure their login information is a
PARENT/GUARDIAN login.

Mayo Clinic and the School of Health Sciences will be
hosting their high school Boot Camp event this fall. This event will take place on Saturday,
October 26, 2013.
The purpose of this
event is to provide an opportunity for high school students to learn about
potential careers in healthcare, and to create an exciting, hands-on experience
to attract young people to healthcare careers.
DISCOUNTED PERFORMANCE FOR DUVAL COUNTY STUDENTS
Bully, written and performed by Lee Kaplan, a Jacksonville native, will
be playing at Jacksonville Theatre September 20th through September 22nd at
8 PM. Tickets are $10 for students, $15 general admission. Performances
will be held at the Harold K. Smith Playhouse, located at 2032 San Marco Blvd.
The play is an autobiographical account based on Kaplan’s sixth
grade journal entries, which depict the bullying he endured in middle
school. Bully has received extremely positive
reviews after performances in Washington DC at the Capital Fringe Festival as
well as New York City at the New York International Fringe Festival.

New College Scholarship Opens for High-Achieving, Low-Income Students Nationwide
Scholarship One of Most Generous in Nation for High School Seniors
LANSDOWNE, Va., Sept. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation opened a new college scholarship for high-achieving, lower-income high school seniors who seek to attend the country's best four-year colleges and universities. In what is expected to be an extremely competitive scholarship, as many as 40 recipients will be awarded up to $30,000 each year for tuition, books, living expenses, and other required fees. The application is open through November 5, 2013. Final notification will be made in February 2014.
Low-income students attending even the best colleges often have unmet need and the transition to college can be challenging for many. "Though we are proud to offer one of the most generous college scholarships in the country, our program will do more than alleviate the financial burden of higher education," said Emily Froimson, vice president of programs at the Foundation. "Scholarship recipients will have access to an on-staff adviser, a supportive community of extraordinary scholars, and opportunities they might not otherwise have, such as funding for internships, study abroad and the opportunity to apply for continued funding for graduate study. There are few programs like it."
To be eligible, applicants must plan to graduate from a U.S. high school in spring 2014 and enroll in an accredited four-year college in fall 2014; earn a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above; receive a SAT combined math and critical reading score of 1200 or above or an ACT composite score of 26 or above; and demonstrate unmet financial need. A rigorous review will consider grades, standardized test scores, participation in available advanced courses, student essays, letters of recommendation, and family finances.

Leaders on Fast Track (LOFT) and the
Entertainment Software Association (ESA) are taking applications for the 2013
ESA LOFT Video Game Innovation Fellowship.
HHF's career development program, LOFT, has partnered with ESA to launch a national program aimed at bringing more youth of color into the gaming industry and helping them confront problems in their community through technology. Apply here now!
The program will identify 20 African American/Latino(a) youth, ages 16-24, to develop a video game that deals with social issues.
