Nearly 73% of Florida high school seniors fail to apply for federal college aid

~Interactive map reveals rate at which students in state counties complete the FAFSA~

Tampa, FL – As of March 15, nearly 73% of Florida high school seniors have failed to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). According to the most up-to-date data released by the U.S. Department of Education’s FAFSA Completion Tool, just 27.1% of Florida high school seniors had finished the key document which secures them access to Pell Grants, federal loans and work-study jobs. A new interactive map developed by the Florida College Access Network (Florida C.A.N.! ) charts the FAFSA completion rates by county and allows viewers to see differences from last year.

“The state deadline to complete the FAFSA is May 15 and for several Florida higher education institutions, their priority deadline has already passed. It’s not too late to get money for college but you have to fill out the form,” said Braulio Colón, executive director of Florida C.A.N.! “Florida has 204,629 high school seniors but only 55,529 of these students have successfully completed the FAFSA. That number is far too low. It means major grants and federal loans are going unused by students who will need them to get a college education and secure a future.”

Last year, the federal government began offering access to its FAFSA Completion Tool which allowed viewers to track how many students at each high school across the country are completing the federal financial aid forms. Previously, high schools estimated their FAFSA completion rate using self-reported surveys, which are often unreliable. Both the FCAN map and the FAFSA Completion Tool will be updated every two weeks.

ANOTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Every year the elementary students from our district compete in the Sunshine Math Competition. This year it is on May 2, 2013 from 4:00-6:00 pm at Wolfson High School.

We are looking for students who would like to earn volunteer hours to help us with the following:

• setting up and tearing down tables from 3:00-7:00 pm.
• runners to deliver finished tests to the scorers AND
• students who could provide entertainment such as singing, dancing, step groups, bands, etc.

The entertainment will last roughly an hour before we present the winners of the math competition.

Jacksonville will be hosting a big event called One Spark.  From April 17 - 21, 2013, Creators in art, music, science and technology from all over the world will showcase ideas and projects to connect with a $250,000 crowdfund awarded by popular vote, up to $1 million in capital investments from Jaguars' owner Shad Khan and immediate individual contributions. Volunteers are needed! One Spark is a great way to meet like-minded curiosity seekers, gain behind-the-scenes access, and help shape our inaugural event.  Multiple volunteer opportunities are available on our project calendar.  Visit our calendar and look for One Spark volunteer opportunities from April 18 - 20!  Volunteer training ends on April 10th, so hurry and register - you won't want to miss this event!

The poetry contest is held twice per year.

Contest dates are January 1 – June 30, July 1 – December 31.

Prizes: Each contest awards one first place prize of $2,000.00 and a first prize wall plaque ($100.00 value); twenty second place prizes of $100.00 each and a second place wall plaque ($75.00 value); one hundred third place winners of a third place wall plaque ($75.00 value). Sixty to seventy percent of all entries become semi-finalists and receive a certificate of participation suitable for framing.

Eligibility: The contest is open to anyone who writes poetry. Poetry can be written in any poetic style and on any subject. Only one poem per person is allowed. Contest entries must be 26 lines or fewer and cannot exceed 55 characters per line. Any submission that exceeds these limits will be automatically disqualified.

Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Camp at the United States Naval Academy

The Naval Academy Summer STEM Program is offered to rising 8th-11th Graders. Students must demonstrate superior academic performance to include GPA, class standing, and/or strong PSAT, SAT or ACT results. Selection is based in large part on ensuring geographic representation along with overall accomplishments in and out of the classroom. Application will close April 15th. All applicants will be notified of their status by May 1st.

Engineering is all about creating, building, and making things better! So what does it take to be an engineer? If you like math and science, you are off to a great start. If you enjoy discovering new things, solving problems, and learning how things work - even better! Creativity, persistence, and the desire to make the world a better place are also important qualities. Becoming an engineer requires hard work and a good education. Our summer program will be a great start to your career in science and engineering.

Applications close April 15 and program tuition is $200.

All students selected to participate will be required to provide a nominal fee of approximately $200 which will include room and board, meals, as well as a variety of materials. Plan on bringing extra cash for snacks and souvenirs.

Each student is responsible for arranging transportation to and from the Naval Academy. Those flying commercial air should make arrangements to arrive at Baltimore-Washington International airport (BWI) between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Day 1 of the program, and depart after 3:00 p.m. on the last day of the program. Buses and midshipmen escorts will be on hand to get you to and from the Academy and BWI.

Action News has a part-time opening for someone who is looking to start a career in television news. This is an excellent opportunity for the right person to begin a career in broadcast news by being a part of our behind the scenes control room and studio floor crew. You will work your way through various duties during our newscasts in order to give you a well rounded set of skills that you can use to grow with us. 

Previous television production experience is preferred. Good communication skills with an understanding of studio etiquette, a willingness to take on a proactive role in the studio and the ability to deal diplomatically with various personalities are all part of this job. 
Candidates must also be physically capable of moving heavy set pieces during newscasts and productions as well as being comfortable with climbing ladders to change out studio lighting as needed. Keep in mind that we work in a deadline driven, pressure filled environment and you must have flexibility to work nights, weekends and changing schedules as well as holidays. Every year, the Friends of 440, a charitable organization comprised of people who work in the Florida workers’ compensation system, grants scholarship funds to deserving kids whose parents are involved in the workers’ compensation system as, for example, lawyers, insurance adjusters, medical personnel who treat workers’ compensation patients, and, of course, injured workers.

            The purpose of this letter is to let you know that these scholarships are available to kids who have the talent, the financial need, and the necessary connection to the workers’ compensation system. High school seniors must have a 2.7 GPA to apply and scholarship recipients must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA and have at least 12 credit hours per semester, in order to remain eligible for funds.

            Applications for scholarships must be received by February 28, 2013, and the application is on our website at: www.440scholarship.org.
