Middle/High School Recovery Programs
Dates: June 18 - July 27, 2012

- Middle and High School Course Recovery
If your middle or high school student needs to recover a one credit course (or two half-credit courses in high school), this 6-week, half-day program is for you. Students may attend one of five middle schools or five high school sites for work through the Compass Odyssey computer program for a 3-hour block. At middle school, Grade 8 students needing one class for promotion will receive top priority. Attendance policy applies. - Middle School Course Recovery Sites

- Algebra I EOC/Course Recovery
If your middle or high school student needs to recover Algebra 1 credit and/or Algebra 1 End of Course (EOC) exam, this six (6) week program is for you. This program will cover the fundamental concepts of algebra. Students will also receive remediation that will prepare them for the retaking EOC exam. Students may attend one of five (5) school sites for teacher lead full day instruction for Algebra 1 recovery. Grade 9 students needing recovery will receive top priority. - College Reading and Mathematics for Success
If your rising 12th grade student needs to demonstrate reading and/or mathematics college readiness due to Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) cut score requirements, this six (6) week, half day program is for you. Students will receive remediation that will prepare them for the retaking the PERT exam. Students may attend one of five (5) high school sites for three hours of teacher lead content specific instruction. Attendance policy applies. - College Reading and Mathematics for Success Sites
High School Academies
- This "Bridge" program will support enhancement of the required reading and mathematics skills to be successful in a new high school environment. Students in this program will receive both academy specific instruction in reading, math, and other college readiness objectives, and engaging introductions to aspects of each school's academy concentration.

If your 11th, 12th or rising 13th grade student has not passed FCAT Reading or FCAT Mathematics required for graduation, this program is for you. Students will receive extensive ACT/SAT preparation with 3 weeks of reading and 3 weeks of mathematics. The district will pay for ACT/SAT tests in early fall for those who complete the program. The district will also provide (at no cost for each student who completes the course) a one-year subscription to ACT/SAT Online. If your high school student needs to recover a one-credit course and has scored an FCAT Level 1 or 2 in reading, mathematics or science, this six-week, half-day program is for you. Students from the 11 Title I high schools are eligible to attend at no cost. DCPS, FSCJ and Bethel Baptist Institutional Church partner in offering this unique, structured-learning environment to support high school credit recovery in English, mathematics, science or social studies courses. FCAT support for 9th and 10th grade students is also available. Limited space is available. Students may attend FSCJ and Bethel Sites for rigorous classroom work with a highly qualified teacher for a four-hour block. Congressional Black Caucus Spouses' ESSAY CONTEST
In 2010, First Lady, Michelle Obama, launched "Let's Move," a comprehensive initiative dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Currently, 33% of children in the United States are considered overweight or obese.
2012 QUESTION:
Everyone in the community has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity. Increasing physical activity is just one of the five pillars in the First Lady's "Let's Move" initiative. As a high school student, what do you see as the biggest barriers to students maintaining a healthy lifestyle by remaining physically active? What can schools, families and your community do to address these barriers in an effort to decrease childhood obesity?
ESSAY CONTEST GUIDELINES:
- All participants must be in their sophomore or junior year of high school.
- Essays should be original compositions; no less than 750 words, or no more than 1,000 words with evidence that supports their findings.
- All essays must include the essay contest cover sheet (SEE MRS. CURRAN IN GUIDANCE FOR YOUR COVER SHEET), and have both the student and his/her guidance counselor's signature.
- Essays must be postmarked on or before FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2012 and should be mailed to: Congressional Black Caucus Spouses, Attn: Essay Contest, 1720 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20036.
- Winners will be selected on or before Friday, August 3, 2012 and all winners must be available to read a portion of their essays at the CBC Spouses Essay Contest and Issues Forum, on Thursday, September 20, 2012 in Washington, D.C.
7th - 12th grade students are invited to attend this important event, where their mission will be to empower youth with the tools that they need to prevent dating violence, and safely exit a relationship should they experience abuse.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards Application is Now Available for
the 2012 Season.

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation
is once again conducting a nation-wide search for the best and the brightest
Hispanic/Latino leaders.
The Hispanic Heritage Youth
Awards offers educational
grants in several categories to qualified Hispanic/Latino high
school juniors. Students are also eligible to be selected as a national
recipient and receive a laptop computer and an all expense paid trip to attend
the National Youth Awards ceremony!
The application is now available
online at www.HispanicHeritage.org. The deadline to
apply
is July 6th. 2012.
Requirements for applicants:
- Current
high school JUNIOR (not seniors)
- Plan
to attend college in the 2013 Fall Semester

Citizenship or US permanent residency

MAYOR'S SUMMER JOBS PROGRAM
Funded by The Jacksonville Journey, the Mayor's Summer Jobs Program provides the opportunity for 185 Duval County students, ages 16-21 to earn valuable experience working in various facets of city government for five, 20-hour weeks, plus one week of training beginning Monday June 18th and ending Friday, July 27th.
Program Eligibility Requirements:
- Youth ages 16-21who have a desire to make a difference in their community and want to gain valuable job skills.
- Must live in Zone 1 - one of the following zip codes: 32202, 32204, 32206, 32208, 32209, 32254
- Must be attending school (high school, college, or trade school
- Must have a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher
- Must have no more than 4 unexcused absences
- Must pass drug test
