The Society of American Military Engineers will grant scholarships in 2010 to graduating high school seniors who wish to seek studies in engineering or architecture. Should you have questions, please contact the local representative using the address or telephone number below.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
1) Be a high school senior.
2) Be a citizen of the United States at the time of application.
3) Be a resident of Clay, Duval, St Johns, Camden, or Nassau counties.
4) Have at least a 3.0 grade point averaged based on a 4.0 scale.
NOTES TO THE APPLICANT
1) The judging will be conducted by the local Jacksonville Post SAME Scholarship Committee on the basis of each candidate’s high school record.
2) The courses you have taken and the credits earned for the 9th through the first semester of the 12th grades will be used to help evaluate your application. You will be disqualified if a certified copy of your transcript is not submitted with the application.
3) Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit, solely on the content of the application. Applicants will be scored on the following: Academic Grades, Honors, Awards, Extracurricular Activities and an Essay.
4) Enroll in an engineering or architecture program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or the National Counsel of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB).
5) Scholarships will be paid directly to the university or college financial aid office. All scholarships are contingent upon your enrollment in a full-time status in an engineering or architecture program and being accepted by the college or university of your choice. Applicants must intend to earn a degree in engineering or architecture and to enter the practice of engineering or architecture after graduation.
6) The announcement of all winners/non-winners will be made in June 2010.
7) Keep a copy of your completed application for future reference.

7th - 12th graders: JTA Jingle Jam Contest

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is expanding its summer program to include the first ever jingle contest! The contest opened April 15th and runs through May 14th. Youth in grades 7-12 will have the opportunity to compose music and sing jingle lyrics that JTA wrote about taking transit to a baseball game. To enter, you will need to upload your 30-second audition video to JTA's website or deliver them to JTA offices. Up to three grand prize winners will be selected!
Prize pack may include: an opportunity to record your audio version of the jingle in a professional recording studio and have it aired on local radio stations; the winning videos will play on the big screen at an upcoming Jacksonville Suns' baseball game; a summer youth pass, good for the entire summer! Look for the posters around Ed White campus!

To show gratitude on behalf of the American people, Freedom Alliance is proud to offer aid to the children of these heroes in the form of college scholarships.
If you or someone you know is the son or daughter of a service member who has sacrificed life or limb, then the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund is available to help alleviate the costs of college.
Over $3 million has been awarded to hundreds of Freedom Alliance Scholarship recipients since 2002.
An eligible applicant must be the dependent son or daughter of a U.S. soldier, sailor, airman, Marine or Guardsman who has been killed or permanently disabled (100% VA disability rating) in an operational mission or training accident, or who is currently classified as a Prisoner of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA). They must also be a high school senior or registered as a full time undergraduate student and under the age of 26.

The March SAT® is this Saturday. The March exam is one of the last chances for seniors to get their scores to colleges.

Students who missed the deadline for SAT registration may still be able to take the test on standby. This means going to a test center on test day with a completed registration form and fee payment. For more information about standby testing, click here.

As you may know, the College Board has launched a brand-new SAT website. It's full of the information that students need, presented in new and exciting ways. We encourage students to visit the Test Day Simulator, an interactive presentation designed to help students understand what the test day experience will be like.

We hope the following tips will be helpful to you on test day! And after the test, remember that students still have 9 days to take advantage of your four free score sends.

Get organized:
Know what to bring and what NOT to bring to the test center.
Prepare yourself like an athlete:
Get plenty of sleep the night before the test. Your brain works better if you're well rested.
Eat a good breakfast that morning.

On Test Day
Leave your cell phone at home. If your phone rings during testing, it could cost you your scores!

• We strongly advise you not to bring a cell phone or any other prohibited electronic device to the test center. If your electronic device makes any noise, or you are seen using it at any time — including breaks — you may be dismissed immediately, your scores may be canceled, and the device may be confiscated.
• This policy applies to any prohibited digital and/or electronic device such as a BlackBerry®, pager, iPod®, MP3 player, camera or other photographic equipment, or separate timers of any kind.

Check to see if your test center is open.

• Tune in to your local media, like you do for school closing announcements.
• Check online for a list of test center closings.

Leave early. Get to the test center no later than 7:45 a.m., unless otherwise noted on your Admission Ticket.
Go to the center listed on your Admission Ticket.

• Even if it's not your first choice, you are only guaranteed admission to the test center on your Admission Ticket.
• You will be charged an extra fee if you go to a different test center, and a seat may not be available for you.

Arrange your ride home ahead of time. Your testing may end a little before or after the times listed below. If you are testing with extended time, ask the supervisor for approximate finish times.
For the SAT, plan on being picked up at approximately 12:45 p.m.

Taking the Test
Keep focused:
Use breaks to eat or drink any snacks you have brought with you.
Pace yourself.
Each question counts the same.
Don't spend too much time on any one question.

At SAME Engineering and Construction Camps, high school students from across the country learn engineering solutions and skills from professional engineers while getting a taste of what it means to work for and with the military services. These exciting weeklong camps take place during the summer months in a variety of settings—the colorful Colorado Rockies, the beautiful Southern California Coast, or the historic Mississippi Valley.

SAME Jacksonville Post will fund transportation cost and one-half the registration fee (1/2 of $550) for USAF and Navy Camps; Post will fund transportation cost for US Army Camp (student fund $50 registration fee).

Do you know a family who is facing a cancer diagnosis?

If you know someone whose family is facing the cancer diagnosis of a parent or caregiver, you know how overwhelming that can be. In addition to important treatment decisions, financial insecurity and fears about the future, there are concerns about how to communicate with children. But now there is help.

KTAC – Kids Together Against Cancer – was developed to assist parents and caregivers provide their children with the coping skills needed for this journey. Developed by a team of oncology social workers under the auspices of St. Vincent’s HealthCare and through the generous support of the Rice Family Foundation, KTAC offers a free five week workshop program with trained professionals for children ages 5 to 17.

D.Y.G. National Summer Academy Criteria
- Prospective Distinguished Young Gentlemen must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. (*Note: D.Y.G. Program Staff will verify the G.P.A of all Applicants).
- Prospective Distinguished Young Gentlemen must be 9th-12th Grade African American Male Students. (*Note: 8th Graders entering 9th Grade are eligible to apply. Students that will be graduating at the end of the 2009-2010 academic school year with a High School Diploma are not eligible to apply).
- Prospective Distinguished Young Gentlemen must have three letters of recommendation.
- Prospective Distinguished Young Gentlemen must write a full one page typed essay detailing their personal background and relevant life experiences.
- Prospective Distinguished Young Gentlemen must submit an official high school transcript.
- Prospective Distinguished Young Gentlemen must submit a photo with application.

GCA has extended the scholarship deadline until Friday, March 12th!!

GCA Service Group will be awarding five (5) $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing a degree in Business at a four year institution.

Requirements:

• Seniors must be enrolled in a Duval County Public School (Charter Schools not included)
• Minimum unweighted GPA of 3.3
• Two Letters of Recommendation (may not be from school counselor who nominated the student)
• Must provide examples of leadership ability
• 1100 SAT critical reading and math / 25 ACT composite
• 500-750 word essay  on “How do you feel businesses and businesspeople can contribute to the mission, vision, and goals of Public Education?
• Must be pursuing a degree in a business related field

Recommendations:
***One male and one female student may be nominated from each high school by their school counselor.
