new: SCIENCE FCAT one-time retake option!!

If you are an 11th grader who did not obtain a Level 2 on the Science FCAT or never attempted the Science FCAT and you are interested in taking it again, Forrest counselors have asked that you please contact Mrs. Bizier at 573-1170, extension 1161. In addition, the Science Benchmark exam will be adminstered to all students on September 14th - - a 60% on this Science Benchmark exam (like the 70% on a science EOC exam) will be equivilent to the Level 2 on the Science FCAT!!!

FALL SCHEDULES

Your schedules are currently being constructed based on the graduation & promotion requirements of Duval County (and, ideally, your elective requests). If you are currently working on FLVS courses, pending changes (if any) will be made to your schedule accordingly THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL. The new high school day will be from 7:30am - 1:45pm (the Ed White bell schedule will be in the student handbook/ and available in guidance during the school year).

DISASTER KIDS Hurricane Season began June 1. HandsOn Jacksonville wants to insure that families are as educated and equipped as they can be during the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season. In partnership with volunteers like you, Duval County Public Schools, the Northeast Florida Chapter of the American Red Cross, and HandsOn Jacksonville is inviting local summer camps to take part in a fun and educational Disaster Preparedness Program. Key Responsibilities:

• After a 30 minute on-site training, volunteers will read the story of Herman (a hermit crab) and the Hunt for a Disaster-Proof Shell to a class of elementary school age students then discuss various aspects of the story.
• Volunteers will then supervise one grade appropriate learning activity related to disaster preparedness.

Summer School paperwork - DEADLINE TUESDAY 6/16!!

As the paperwork that was mailed home read, all summer school paperwork must be submitted to Forrest High School today. After today, feel free to request any classes you want to recover credit in on Florida Virtual School (FLVS). The "FLVS Steps 2 Take" were also mailed home along with report cards, summer school info, etc. Refer to the "Steps 2 Take" in order to request/complete classes on FLVS!

CREDIT RECOVERY Q & A

Those of you waiting for guidance approval on FLVS need to wait until you receive your report cards - - quarter/final grades may have reaveraged with a higher final grade which would mean some of you DO NOT NEED to complete credit recovery. Some of you MAY STILL NEED to complete credit recovery, so Ds or Fs that shows on your report card need to be replaced but REMEMBER: you can only earn 12 credits per year.

***So if you earned all 8 credits this year, but with Ds, you can only replace up to 4 of those credits...

***Also, some of you are claiming you still need guidance approval when in fact your parent/guardian needs to grant you online approval through their own account. Go HERE to start that parent/guardian account.

Credit Recovery

Make sure that if you are requesting classes on Florida Virtual School (http://www.flvs.net/) that you are informing your parent/guardian: they must apply for their own account so that they can give you approval to take your course(s) as well!! See your counselor for Steps to Take!

2009-2010 REGISTRATION

For the past two weeks, scheduled teachers brought their classes to Houston Hall to register students for next year's classes with their counselor (by alphabet order of last name). Then, on Thursday and Friday of last week (4/30 & 5/1) English classes brought their classes to do the same, in case someone fell through the cracks. ***IF YOU HAVE STILL NOT REGISTERED FOR NEXT YEAR'S CLASSES WITH YOUR COUNSELOR AND YOU ARE IN THE 9th OR 10th GRADES, SEE YOUR COUNSELOR DURING YOUR LUNCH THIS WEEK. (Juniors will be called down individually by their counselors to register for next year and undergo a preliminary graduation check so wait to be called down!)

Guidance will be completing senior warning letters this week. If you are in danger of failing a class (even if you got a C on your 3rd quarter report card) you will recieve a letter. We keep the originals that your 'rents can check out any time so don't try to hide this business! You would only be postponing the inevitable!! Duval County Public Schools Offers FCAT Resources for Parents and Students JACKSONVILLE – FCAT testing starts tomorrow in Duval County and Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) has launched an online FCAT Information Center at www.duvalschools.org that provides parents with a schedule of testing dates, answers to frequently asked questions, and access to valuable grade-specific resources and links that can be used to help students achieve success on the FCAT. Parents/Guardians of students in every grade level are also invited to the district’s FCAT Parent Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Raines High School, 3663 Raines Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32209. Staff from the district's reading, math and science departments will be answering questions and discussing FCAT preparation strategies that can be used by students at home. I'm pleased to announce QuestBridge's expanded 2009 College Prep Scholarship, which will help more than 1,000 outstanding low-income high school juniors compete for admission to top-ranked colleges. We would be grateful if you could pass this information on to educators so they can convey it to qualified students. The College Prep Scholarship allows students to access many opportunities through one application, including: 10 full scholarships to college summer programs at Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Notre Dame, and Yale University 40 awards of college admissions counseling provided by QuestBridge staff 1,000 invitations to QuestBridge College Admissions Conferences at Stanford and Yale (increased from 800 last year) 100 all-expense-paid visits to top-ranked colleges (increased from 30 last year) The scholarship application is free of charge and due on March 31, 2009. Your assistance is vital to our ability to serve students as a non-profit program. Last year, 260 students gained admission and full four-year scholarships to top-ranked colleges through our programs, and 800 more QuestBridge applicants were admitted to selective colleges through the regular decision process with generous financial aid. 2009 SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS - FREE!! MIT announces its MITES Program, (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science), a challenging 6 week summer program that prepares promising rising seniors for careers in engineering and science. If you are selected, all educational, housing, meals and activity costs are covered. You must, however, pay for your own transportation to and from MIT. GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Science & Engineering Apprenticeship program (summer) - Applications due: Feb. 27, 2009 - This program places academically talented H.S. students (at least 16 yrs old, sophomores/ juniors) with interest in science & math in Dept. of Defense laboratories for an 8-wk period over the summer. This is an invaluable experience in the world of scientific research, with hands-on exposure to scientific & engineering practices not available in the HS environment. DDC is an academic day camp for students who will be high school juniors and seniors during the 2009-2010 school year. Campers will take on the roles of disease detectives and learn how CDC safeguards the national ™s health. The camp will be offered twice from June 22-26 and July 13-17. This years ™s program will be held at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland from June 21-27.
