new: SCIENCE FCAT one-time retake option!!
In addition, the Science Benchmark exam will be adminstered to all students on September 14th - - a 60% on this Science Benchmark exam (like the 70% on a science EOC exam) will be equivilent to the Level 2 on the Science FCAT!!!Monday, July 6, 2009

Volunteers Needed
DISASTER KIDS Hurricane Season began June 1. HandsOn Jacksonville wants to insure that families are as educated and equipped as they can be during the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season. In partnership with volunteers like you, Duval County Public Schools, the Northeast Florida Chapter of the American Red Cross, and HandsOn Jacksonville is inviting local summer camps to take part in a fun and educational Disaster Preparedness Program. Key Responsibilities: - After a 30 minute on-site training, volunteers will read the story of Herman (a hermit crab) and the Hunt for a Disaster-Proof Shell to a class of elementary school age students then discuss various aspects of the story.
- Volunteers will then supervise one grade appropriate learning activity related to disaster preparedness.

We were just informed that if you: 1) took the science FCAT, 2) earned a Level 1 (not the level 2 needed for promotion) and 3) have met all other promotion requirements*, you can take the Science FCAT on July 28th!!!! *Promotion requirements for the 12th grade:
- GPA of 1.5 or higher
- 18 total credits, including 3 English and either 4 Math and/or 4 Science
- Level 2 on the Science FCAT***

11th GRADERS READ THIS!!!!
- GPA of 1.5 or higher
- 18 total credits, including 3 English and either 4 Math and/or 4 Science
- Level 2 on the Science FCAT***
***If you meet the first two promotion requirements listed above, but failed to achieve a level 2 on the Science FCAT, you will be promoted to the 12th grade automatically anyway IF you received a 70% or higher on the End of Course (EOC) exam in your science class during the 2008-2009 school year.

- Florida Virtual School credit recovery (www.flvs.net) is a good option for any Ds or Fs you received this year - Fs mean you failed to earn credit and Ds mean your GPA will drop! YOU MUST HAVE THAT 2.0 TO GRADUATE!

Community Involvement & Scholarship opportunity
Do you know a youth, 17-20 years of age, who would benefit from sitting on the State Farm Youth Advisory Board(YAB)? State Farm is currently accepting board member applications for the 2009-2010 YAB. Those who are chosen to serve as an Associate Youth Advisory Board member receive a $3,000 scholarship to be used for post-secondary education at a four-year, two-year or vocational training program. Associate members may become full Board members with a second year of service and receive a $5,000 scholarship. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2009.
