Art & Essay Contest

Amity Turkish Cultural Center (ATCC) and Florida State College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) are presenting the Annual Art and Essay contest for middle and high school students in the State of Florida. ATCC is also proud to have WJCT as the media sponsor and CSX as the business sponsor. The Contest is approved by Duval County, St John's County, and Clay County Public Schools.
Objective: To promote critical thinking skills as relates to diversity and multicultural issues. To recognize and create ways for young people to think about helping their community and to think in universal terms to foster more opportunities for alliance of civilizations, i.e. intercultural understanding and respect.
Theme: Middle and high school students in the state of Florida are invited to submit an original artwork and/or essay on the theme "Alliance of Civilizations" which is the United Nations' concept of interaction and coordination among nations and cultures globally. Its purpose is to establish relations and facilitate cross-cultural dialogue, understanding, reconciliation and cooperation and, in the process, to help counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism. Prizes: ATCC will distribute 24 awards to students and their teachers. All of the participating students will receive a special participation certificate whereas the winners and their teachers will receive special achievement certificates. The Award Ceremony will take place on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at 7 p.m. at The Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts (at Florida State College at Jacksonville, South Campus).

  2. Must have a score of 22 or above on the ACT
  3. Must be interested in obtaining a college degree to teach school in Florida
  4. This scholarship application will be sent to state competition & IF a winner, they would receive: $500 freshman year, $750 sophomore year, $1000 junior & senior years
  5. Applicant might win a local scholarship for $500 each year for a total of 4 years

ROTC Four Year Scholarship (a note from the chapter president)

Yes, this is an annual scholarship. In fact, the National President from my organization (National Naval Officers Association) wants the East Coast Chapters (Jacksonville being one of the Chapters) to locate 4 deserving high school students for these scholarships. The scholarship documents must be submitted in a timely manner as indicated on the forms. All applicants of the NROTC Scholarships are required to apply at the http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/ website. Additionally, the Jacksonville Chapter of NNOA will provide scholarship funds to local deserving students around the end of the school year. Do you need money for college? If so, the Southern Scholarhip Foundation can help! It's a non-profit organization which awards qualifying students with housing scholarships on the following campuses:
FSU * UF * FAMU * FGCU
Interested applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and a demonstrated financial need. Scholarhip recipients live cooperatively in a house with students representing a variety of backgrounds and cultures. They do not pay rent, but are responsible for their fair share of basic household expenses such as food & utilities. The entire cost to the student averages $950 per semester. APPLY HERE!!

LT. GOVERNOR CHALLENGES STUDENTS TO RE-DESIGN A PORTION OF THE DOE's WEB SITE


TALLAHASSEE – Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp visited with local Career and Technical Education (CTE) students today and challenged them to put their skills to the test by re-designing the student portion of the Florida Department of Education’s (DOE) Web site. The re-design competition is aimed at encouraging students to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in their CTE course(s) to a real-world project. The winning student submission will be incorporated into the Department’s existing Web site design to be deployed in 2010. “We are living in the age of technology where the mastery of these skills can lead our children into fulfilling and prosperous careers,” said Lt. Governor Kottkamp. “This competition is a wonderful opportunity for our students to display their talent, and I am eager to see the great ideas and designs they are able to come up with.” The contest is open to any student who is enrolled in one or more of the CTE courses that prepare students for a career in Information Technology (IT), Multimedia, Web Page Design, and/or Digital Design (Media). Through Florida’s Division of Career and Adult Education there are nearly 300 Career and Technical training programs including 25 secondary CTE programs specific to information technology and Web design. The contest is open to approximately 84,000 CTE students across Florida. Student submissions will be judged by a panel of technology and design experts, as well as communications and public relations professionals. Members of the judging panel include individuals from Brandt Information Services, CoreMessage Inc., Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Salter>Mitchell, Taproot Creative and Florida Department of Education. “I’m excited to give our students the chance to apply the knowledge they’ve gained through their advanced coursework and training to the re-design of a significant portion of our Web site,” said Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. “By integrating student ideas directly into our most important communications source, we can be sure we’re providing students with the information they need and want to know to further their education.” Entries must be submitted via CD and include the name of the student, the student’s high school name and address, the teacher or advisor who assisted in the project and the name of the school district. Grade Recovery: Step 1 to getting back on track!


Are you struggling in a class? Was your progress report grade not what you need to get that required 2.0 for graduation? TALK TO YOUR TEACHERS NOW ABOUT GRADE RECOVERY! Grade recovery is conducted on a quarterly basis, between you & your teachers, and is done through Compass Odyssey (the software program used to recovery grades & credits). You can work to bring up your grade this quarter or next! See your teacher NOW before it's too late! ***You only have until the end of the next grading period to complete that grade recovery, but you can also work to bring up this quarter's grade during this quarter!!

Our first notification deadline is right around the corner...October 14. I have received many emails from students, parents, and counselors who think this is an early admission, early action deadline. It is not. It's just one of two deadlines. We encourage students to try to be proactive and apply early. For the last couple of years, admissions requirements increased for our second notification, there was no scholarship money available for qualified students, and on-campus housing was more limited.
Please remind your students to send us all test scores. We will not penalize them for the number of times a test is taken, or for the actual scores themselves. In our process where we have minimum subscore requirements and we combine the highest subscores to form the ACT composite or SAT total, it can only help them. In addition, if we have a score in place by our October 14 deadline, we will allow the October and November scores to roll in for our December 9 notification as long as the student indicates Florida State as a recipient of the score report.
The following are the minimum subscore requirements for admission consideration:
Writing: 500 on the SAT writing or 21 on the ACT English or 21 on the Essay/Writing optional portion of the ACT Math: 500 on the SAT math or 21 on the ACT math Reading: 500 on the critical reading portion of the SAT or 22 on the reading portion of the ACT
